Humanizing Migration Through Powerful Visual Storytelling

Client: International Organization for Migration (IOM) Pakistan

Overview

In June 2025, Sparkom collaborated with IOM Pakistan to produce photo and video stories documenting the lived experiences of Afghan nationals supported under the Resettlement and Movement Management (RMM) project. The objective was to humanize migration narratives and highlight the role of counselling services, mental health support, and migration management assistance in safeguarding dignity during complex migration processes.

The stories were designed to move beyond statistics, bringing forward real voices, emotions, and journeys to support advocacy, awareness, and institutional communication.

Our Approach

Sparkom adopted a human-centered, trauma-informed storytelling approach, ensuring ethical representation and contextual sensitivity throughout production:

  • Visual Documentation: Captured compelling photo and video narratives portraying personal journeys, moments of resilience, and interactions with IOM support systems.
  • Story Framing: Structured stories to clearly illustrate how counselling, psychosocial support, and migration assistance contribute to stability and informed decision-making.
  • Ethical Production: Followed protection-sensitive protocols, ensuring dignity, consent, and cultural respect in all visual content.
  • Multi-Use Assets: Produced content adaptable for reports, donor communication, presentations, digital platforms, and advocacy materials.

Impact

  • Strengthened Human-Centered Narratives: Shifted migration communication from abstract processes to people-centered stories, enhancing empathy and understanding among stakeholders.
  • Advocacy & Donor Engagement: Visual assets supported donor reporting, advocacy briefs, and institutional storytelling, reinforcing the value of IOM’s RMM interventions.
  • Awareness on Mental Health Support: Highlighted the importance of counselling and psychosocial services in migration contexts often underrepresented in migration discourse.
  • Institutional Credibility: Enabled IOM Pakistan to communicate complex migration assistance work with clarity, sensitivity, and authenticity.
  • Long-Term Content Value: Created a visual repository usable across multiple campaigns, reports, and platforms extending impact beyond a single publication cycle.
